At Leeds Beckett University, we work with thousands of businesses, providing a wide range of skills and support to help businesses to grow and thrive. We have a strong history of supporting early stage businesses through our University Business Centres, which are currently home to over 200 small businesses.
We provide a range of tailored support to businesses including access to funding, business advice, mentoring, professional training, networking events, affordable office space, free business lounges, access to academic research expertise, knowledge transfer activities and access to graduate talent.
In the past 15 years Leeds Beckett University Business Centres have successfully supported more than 800 businesses to grow, creating over 1,300 jobs and with collective turnover in excess of £42 million.
Our business centre support is proven to almost double early stage sustainability with more than 95 per cent of businesses trading after two years as opposed to 50 per cent without support.
An ERDF funded Ad:Venture business growth support programme has recently been launched by the university, it’s aim is to help early stage businesses to accelerate their growth and provide free support to high growth businesses less than three years old.
Leeds Beckett University Enterprise and Innovation Manager Katie Rigarlsford said: “We have a strong history of supporting business creation and growth and are delighted to sponsor the Wakefield Express Business Awards to recognise the ambitions of early stage businesses in the Wakefield district.”
University business support and free business lounge facilities are available in Leeds and at Wakefield One:

Working with suppliers of all sizes to deliver value nationwide
YPO, the UK’s largest publicly owned buying organisation, is a true Yorkshire-based organisation that has continued to provide business investment and employment opportunities to the Wakefield area for several decades. The organisation is owned by 13 founder member authorities, including Wakefield Council, and an expanding list of associate member authorities across the wider public sector.
Whilst the organisation celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2014 as YPO, its roots can actually be traced back to 1915 when it began operating as West Riding County Supplies. In 1974, Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation was established constitutionally as a Joint Committee of Local Authorities. The aim was to aggregate the procurement spend of its owning local authorities and help drive public sector efficiency savings through its bulk buying power for supplies and contract services.
Following a re-brand at the end of 2012, the organisation is today known simply as YPO and employs over 500 people in the Yorkshire region. With primary and secondary education as its core business, each year, YPO supplies a diverse range of products including over 30 million exercise books, 230 tons of glue sticks, and contracts including electricity, gas and photocopiers to schools throughout the UK.
Over the past four decades, YPO has worked tirelessly to help public sector customers make the best use of their ever squeezed budgets. From schools and charities to the NHS and emergency services, the organisation has consistently returned its profits to the public purse, helping to save money and deliver efficiencies back to frontline public services.
This year, the organisation already secured the title of Supplier of the Year at the BESA Education Resources Awards for the second consecutive year, and was ranked 71st in the Sunday Times 100 Best Not-For-Profit Companies to Work For 2015.
With a vision that every public sector organisation should achieve the best possible value for money when purchasing goods and services, YPO aims to develop close working relationships with suppliers of all sizes who identify with this goal. Last year, YPO spent £4.7 million with suppliers based in Wakefield alone. In the Yorkshire and Humber region, spend with suppliers amounted to £42.3 million.
YPO is delighted to be sponsoring the Small to Medium Business of the Year category at the Wakefield District Business Awards 2015, and supporting business growth in the local and regional economy.
